Basilica de La Sagrada Familia

The organic towers can be seen from all over the city.

A thing of beauty.

When I took this photo in 1971, this was all that existed. A facade of the front of the north face, with nothing behind it.

In this 2015 photo you can see the same original facade having a chocolate color. But behind it is an entire cathederal.

This 1971 photo shows some of the original Gaudi organic, melting design.

Since that time many sculptured figures have been added. You can tell them from their lighter color.

Lots of additions. The overall theme by Gaudi was an art nuveau styling. In the newer south side of the cathederal there is a clear difference in design motif.

This is the new south side. Look closely at the figures sculpted into it.

These figures are clearly art deco in style. Shows an interesting shift that took place after Gaidi's untimely death. It is nice to see that the designers have kept to the deco style rather than going more modern.

So, let's go inside and see this amazing place. Fasten your seatbelt, the visual impact is enormous.

Like being inside a living organism. Gaudi studied nature and used the same structure found in trees where the joints are larger than the branches in order to support change of direction and/or size of branch.

His light-hearted design makes the concrete structure seem to be weightless. Can you see the flowers?

The altar is a simple block of stone with this very light, floating Christo over it.

The colored light coming in from all sides creates a wonderful sense of warmth.

The year 2026 is the target for completion. Yet to be built is a 100-meter tall main tower rising from the area of orange scaffolding. I'll be back!
